The promise of mobile

This past week I traveled to Detroit to participate in a 2008 planning session and decided to see if I could function without my beloved MacBook Pro computer.
I took two mobile devices with me (my Blackberry Curve and my iPod Touch) to see how close we are to the promise of ubiquitous mobile computing.
I’m pleasantly surprised to announce that I was quite capable of fulfilling all of my work and leisure information and connection requirements using these two devices. I was able to send and receive work emails, read attachments, get vital information via the web and engage in multiple digital conversations with little frustration. The Curve functioned extremely well for all my work email and directions using the Google Maps app. I successfully used Twitter via SMS and http://m.twitter.com. I successfully used the Blackberry Facebook app to upload photos and http://iphone.facebook.com for other Facebook activities. There was WiFi at the hotel and in the office so my iPod Touch worked seamlessly.
Now all I need to get is a pair of these glasses that enable a virtual screen experience!
No more hassles with my laptop at airport security.
Happy New Year – I think 2008 is going to be the year where the promise of mobile will be successfully delivered.
