Hopefully we all hear the wake-up call and reprioritize .

I'm convinced that a focus on social leverage / social capital will allow us to do more collective good than the strict focus on financial leverage / financial capital has done in the past.

These crazy times have one good side effect: introspection. Sadly, it's often some cataclysmic event that causes us to reflect - like the current convergence of so many things – war, global economic meltdown, terrorism, etc.

I'm thinking of it as a really loud wake-up call that we need to get back to the basics and reprioritize understanding that we are all in this together - to your point "contribute significantly to the upliftment of others less fortunate"

I cannot understand why you do not cite the two most damaging institutional culprits in world history: religion and government. Far, far worse than any corporation, wealthy individual (why on earth should you call out people of wealth vs. poor people??), or so-called charitable organization. Less spirituality/less voo-doo/more logic = a better life for all. Pleasepleaseplease read Atlas Shrugged (or at least, “We the Living”).

Well done David. My wife and I have been trying to live this idea since I left Aeroplan (see www.thruyou.com especially towards the end of Jan. when the 'beta' is released). It has not been easy either financially or personally. I would characterized the rewards differently from your formula, i.e. servant =>self-knowledge=>enlightenment=>peace. Caution: having lived immersed in the third sector for two years, I have some misgivings about where philanthropy is going as everyone jumps on the bandwagon. We must be vigilant.
